Create the Perfect Crochet Kits for Beginners

Interested in joining the wonderful world of crochet? Crocheting is a fantastic, fun, and stress-relieving hobby that allows you to create beautiful pieces that you, your family, and your friends will simply adore. If you want to learn how to crochet, but don't know where to start, Wool & Waves have you covered. Find out here everything you need to build the ultimate crochet kits for beginners.

Crochet Hooks

It might seem like a no-brainer for the seasoned crocheter, but for all you newbies out there, finding the right hook can take some trial and error.  We like a hook that has a comfortable grip, not slippery or too small.

When it comes to crochet hooks, there is certainly no shortage of options to choose from. But for beginners, it is a good idea to start off with a Knitter's Pride WAVES G/7 (4.50mm) or H/8 (5mm) hook. The size and material of this hook is comfortable to hold in your hand, making the movements of crocheting easier than using the smaller or larger options. With time and experience, you can choose other hooks as your skills progress.  Another option is to dive in and grab yourself a set of the WAVES hooks, saving you money in the long run = more money for YARN!

Yarn

Not all yarn is created equal. For your first project, we recommend choosing Worsted weight, commonly known as Number 4 yarn. It is not too fine or too thick. Also go with a smooth, light-coloured yarn. If you use dark or fuzzy material, it will be harder to see your stitches.

Remember, you will make mistakes so choosing a yarn that can handle being ripped out a few times is also a good idea which is why we suggest Universal Uptown Worsted or Estelle SUDZ.  Uptown Worsted is a super awesome non-piling 100% acrylic which makes it PERFECT for learning how to crochet.  Also, if you are thinking of starting off with dishcloths, Estelle SUDZ is a 100% Worsted weight Cotton - our go-to for dishcloths and other crafty goodies.

Stitch Markers

The best stitch markers for our crochet projects are ones that you can attach to your project - they are often referred to as 'light-bulbs' or 'locking stitch markers'.  They are very handy when you are just getting started and need to mark which side of your work is the 'right-side' or the 'wrong side'.

This will all start to make sense as you continue down the learn to crochet road.

Tapestry or Darning Needles

When you are done crocheting your first project you will need something to weave in the yarn ends.  You don't need anything fancy but you will need a darning needle (sometimes referred to as a tapestry needle). The needle eyes come in a large variety of sizes so make sure that the darning needle you choose is large enough for the yarn you are using.

Scissors

Snip Snip! When you get to the end of your first project, you will need something
to cut the yarn. Sure, the household scissors will do fine for now, but they always seem to go missing or go dull when you need them the most.
